The Mission Isn’t Optional: Why Every Christian Is Sent

Mission isn’t for the elite few — it’s for all of us. If you’ve been changed by the Gospel, you’ve been sent by it. Here’s why that changes everything.

The Mission Isn’t Optional: Why Every Christian Is Sent
“As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”
— Jesus (John 20:21)

When we think about “missions,” our minds often jump to overseas work, nonprofit causes, or that one family your church supports in another country. It feels distant. Specialized. For the uniquely called.

But that’s not how Jesus framed it.

In John 20:21, Jesus doesn’t say, “Some of you will go.” He says, “I am sending you.” That wasn’t just to the apostles. That wasn’t just to pastors. That’s to all of us.

If you’ve been changed by the Gospel, you’ve been called by the Gospel.
You are sent.

We’ve Made Mission Too Small

Somewhere along the way, the church in the West turned “mission” into a program — something we support, schedule, or fundraise for.

But mission isn’t an event. It’s not a department. It’s not a trip.

Mission is the identity of the Church.
And it’s the identity of every believer.

The moment we come to Christ, we are not only saved from something — we are saved for something. Every Christian is now an ambassador of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18–20). Every life is now an outpost of the Kingdom.

The Sent Life Is the Normal Christian Life

To be Living Sent is to see your job, your street, your relationships, your rhythms as places where the Kingdom can break in.

  • It’s praying for your co-worker instead of just venting.
  • It’s listening with love at the Little League field.
  • It’s showing up with casseroles and gospel hope in a crisis.
  • It’s not just inviting people to church — it’s being the Church wherever you go.

You are not waiting to be sent. You already are.

It’s Time to Rethink Calling

Maybe no one told you this, but your calling isn’t something you discover “out there.”

You’re already in your calling — it’s wherever your feet are.

God has already placed you in a network of relationships, needs, wounds, and opportunities. And He’s sending you into those places with love, humility, and courage.

What This Blog Is All About

Living Sent is for people like you — believers who are tired of performance Christianity and hungry for purpose.

People who believe the Church was made for more than survival.
People who believe discipleship and justice go hand in hand.

In this space, we’ll explore what it means to live as missionaries in our own neighborhoods, reclaim a missional theology that leads to shalom, and wrestle with what it means to plant churches, love people, and live on purpose — even in a broken world.
